National Day of Dutch Living Heritage!

The Dutch Rare Breed Survival Trust organizes her “National Day of the Living Heritage” at Sunday 3th of June. This is an unique event, because you can see almost all Dutch indigenous farm animals in the park Presikhaaf nearby the city farm Presikhaaf at Arnhem, (Gelderland) the Netherlands.

Living Heritage

Besides their good qualities, these animals look very pretty. Their specific colours, their peaceful nature and the history they represent are,  mainly for hobby farmers,  all good reasons  to keep them. Who doesn’t enjoy a beautiful couple of Groninger Mew on the farm scratching the soil in the farmyard , the power of a draught horse, or a sheepdog that herds the sheep? Every breed has its own story to tell in agriculture history and its own original breeding area which gives them a unique cultural historic value. That is why we call the indigenous Dutch farm animals breeds our ‘living heritage’.

Big day

On the National Day of Dutch Living Heritage more than 50 original rare breeds will be presented. For example the Dutch Belted cattle, the Groningen horse and the Gelderland horse, Dutch landrace goat, several breeds of sheep and dogs and a huge variety of poultry breeds. During demonstrations, shows and competitions the breeds present themselves and you will see why they certainly have the right to exist.

This right to exist is also visible in the culinary tent at the event. A place where the visitors can taste the products of rare breeds. Visitors can also get involved in the process of cooking eggs, milk, cheese and meat.

There are a number of activities for children of all ages which give them the opportunity to meet the animals and their diversity.
